Supporting local leaders who are able to drive community-based strategies is at the heart of our social justice work. This is especially important when we are targeting leadership mindsets and challenging problematic historical narratives. Join AchieveMission and TandemEd in discussing:
What does it mean to take a justice-minded approach to supporting local leaders of color?
What gets in our way of effectively hiring, developing, and retaining local leaders of color?
How do we help our partners and collaborators hold themselves accountable to justice-minded work?
What are the organizational and individual sacrifices we must be willing to make to adjust toward these goals?
In this interactive session, you will be prompted to reflect on your own organization and practice, examine what might be getting in your way of supporting and investing in local leaders in your community, and identify key practices that may serve you in building and sustaining a justice-minded approach to your work.

Dorian O. Burton (@Dorian_Burton) is the assistant executive director and chief program officer at the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust. He is also co-founder of TandemED. Burton holds a Doctorate degree from Harvard University, where he is also an affiliate of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School.
Brian C.B. Barnes, (@BCBBarnes) is the chief community officer at the Tennessee Achievement School District and is co-founder of TandemED. Barnes holds a Doctorate degree from Harvard University, where he is also an affiliate of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School.
Mike Markovits, a partner at AchieveMission, is an expert in leadership development, talent management, and succession planning. Prior to joining the AchieveMission team, Mike was the head of Talent Development at IBM. Earlier, Mike held similar positions at GE, including leading the design and global delivery of GE’s widely-emulated leadership and executive development curriculum at the famed Crotonville center.
